LA City Voters - Vote “NO” on Prop S – It’s Really a Tax Hike

On election day, this coming Tuesday, February 5th, you will not only be able to vote in the presidential primary, but you will also have an opportunity to vote on certain ballot issues. If you live in the City of Los Angeles, one of the ballot issues is Proposition S, and I urge you to vote NO. This ballot proposal is deceptively billed as a tax reduction, but in reality would expand taxes on telecommunication services and open the door to taxing of your internet services. Don’t let the politicians get away with this deception. It is critical that this proposition be defeated, so please vote NO and email this information to everyone who could potentially vote in Los Angeles. We need your help to get the word out. Please take a moment to read and another few moments to act. YOU can make a difference.

Here’s the Facts

1. Prop S would RAISE your taxes, not lower them.
Prop S would ratify tax hikes City Hall made illegally in the past. City Hall adopted certain taxes on cell phones and land lines without voters' approval, which is illegal under our state constitution and which has been struck down by two court decisions. If Prop S passes, those taxes would stay in force, and would drop from 10% to 9% -- but if Prop S fails, those taxes would disappear altogether, so they would go from 10% to ZERO percent. When coming up with the plan to have voters validate their illegal tax hike through Prop S, Mayor Villaraigosa persuaded council members to seek a 9% tax - just so they could bill it as a tax cut. That's what's so sneaky about Prop S!

Prop S would also impose a BRAND NEW TAX on DSL, wireless, text-messaging, instant-messaging, VoIP and other "new" communications services. The new tax could cover everything from a land-line telephone call to a photograph sent from a cell-phone camera to a text message sent via BlackBerry. And, it’s possible that if Prop S is approved, in the future, the city could impose other taxes on your basic internet access without getting any voter approval.

2. Prop S is unfair.
Prop S would tax YOU at 9%, but telemarketers would pay only 5%. Plus, the L.A. Times and other newspapers and radio stations would pay NO tax on cellular, wireless and internet services.

3. Prop S is unnecessary.
Despite the scare tactics, you can be sure that essential services won’t be cut if Prop S fails. Mayor Villaraigosa has repeatedly said he would protect the Los Angeles Police Department from cuts and press on with the goal of adding 1,000 officers by 2010.
Furthermore, the City of L.A. has higher taxes than any city in the county, and already takes in more revenues than ever in its history: $6.7 billion per year. Even if we repealed all cell phone and land line taxes, and hired 1,000 new police officers, the city's tax revenues would still be 21% higher than they were in 2004-05.

Meanwhile, City Hall wastes YOUR tax money on hundreds of millions of dollars per year on subsidies to downtown developers and on other wasteful spending. For example,
there are only 15 City Council members, but 108 city owned and paid-for cars assigned to those council members' offices. That’s over 7 cars per council member. In addition, $66 million in taxpayer subsidies will go to the out-of-state developers of the Grand Avenue luxury shopping and hotel project downtown and $270 million in tax breaks — the very amount city officials cite as the upcoming budget shortfall — is going to AEG, which developed the ritzy L.A. Live entertainment venue downtown. These are just a few examples of how LA government wastes your tax dollars. So why should you pay higher taxes while the special interests get perks and big tax breaks?
And to add insult to injury, the City is squandering $5.1 million to put Prop S on the ballot as a special election when they could have saved that money and just added Prop S to the next regular municipal election. But that’s not until April of 2009. Apparently, the City Council just can’t wait to get its hands on your hard earned dollars.
Other cities thrive with no phone taxes. Did you know that Beverly Hills, Thousand Oaks and San Diego have no phone tax? The same goes for Atlanta, Boston, and Philadelphia. As for cities that do impose phone taxes, New York’s tax is just 2.4%; Long Beach and Las Vegas charge 5%; and Burbank and Portland charge 7%. So why must we pay 9%?
Prop S is a big rip-off. Vote no, and PLEASE email everyone you know who lives in Los Angeles and tell them to do the same. The special interests behind Prop S have put up $2.3 million for a misleading advertising campaign. We taxpayers, by contrast, have to let one another know. We need to get the word out or the deceptive title and wording of Prop S will probably lead many uninformed voters to vote yes and that means higher taxes for us all.

Sun Apr 29, 2007 7:28 pm (PST)
Hi, I'm forwarding this for another member:
I know this is off topic but I'm hoping someone in the area can help.
I'm in the SF Bay Area and got a call from some friends who were
travelling to LA and had an accident last night (Saturday 4/28) in or
near Thousand Oaksor Agoura. They called at 1:45am so the accident
must have been before 1am and was probably no earlier than 9 or 10pm,
but I don't know for sure. They were in an RV which is now totalled.
The side was ripped off. The mom has an eye injury and may need
surgery. The dad is uninjured. They have 2 infants, one of which is
seriously injured, the other is okay. They were travelling with their
dog and 4 cats. The dog is okay. One cat is dead and the other 3 are
missing.I can not imagine how they will be able to look for these
cats that they love so dearly. Their son is being transfered to
another hospital, possibly even out of the area. They don't know
anyone local to there.I spoke with Agoura Animal Control. They have
the dog and she's safe there. They went to look for the cats but only
found the dead one. They told me the accident was on southbound 101
with the closest exit the 900 block number of North Westlake Blvd. He
believes the accident was south of that exit but I'm not sure. All I
know is there was a bank they rolled down and the RV hit a tree.
The missing cats are Geri (female, gray DSH), Sammi (female, gray
DSH), and Little Guy (male, black, I think long hair but I can't
remember if it was him or the cat who died who had long hair. Both
were black). Is there anyone in that area who can help? I am worried
sick about thesekitties (who are related to my own cats) as well as
worried about thelittle boy and everything else.
LATEST UPDATE:
I just spoke with my friends, they are now at a hospital in Los
Angeles. They did go back to the crash site this morning but found no
trace of the 3 missing cats. They said the crash site was in a
business park by Westlake Blvd on 101 South, but they couldn't recall
if it was north or south of the exit.
The Westlake Village Golf Course is near there and they are on the
lookout for the cats. I've been calling rescue organizations but 1)
no one answers their phones on the weekend and 2) I can't find one
local to Thousand Oaks/Agoura.
Please anyone who can help, we really need it. I know there are
internet groups that mobilize around missing pets (like that dog who
got lost at the airport a few months ago) but I don't know how to
reach them. Forward this notice to appropriate places. We want to
find those kitties alive!Even if you can't help look for them, if you
know local animal hospitals and etc, calling them would be very
helpful.
The missing cats are all short-haired. 1 black male and 2 gray
females,all related.

Thank you!
Cyndi

Hi everyone!

I’m writing a new article for Womens Health (in case you don’t know – it’s
like Mens Health only for women), and I need to profile couples . If
you and your partner do any of the below, or know people who do, please pass
this on to them...They can see a sample of the questions I’ll be asking them
at the bottom of the page...

Or if you and your partner do something cool and unique that you think I
should profile, I’m all for making that pitch..YOU DO NOT NEED TO LIVE IN
NY..It doesn’t matter where you live. You will have to participate in a
photo shoot. They’ll do your makeup and make you look all pretty and
handsome.

What I need is for you to send me what you do together and a recent photo of
the two of you. Tell me how long you’ve been together. Your relationship
status and if you have any children (and your and their ages).

Here are some ideas for the types of couples we'd be interested in
profiling.

a couple who does some kind of intense athletic training together – maybe a
marathon or triathalon or something like that...

a couple who runs a business together

a couple who volunteers together

a couple who has done/or does some kind of adventure-y thing together.

a couple who blog together

a couple who are both screenwriters (maybe they write for the same show?)

a couple who are both in a band together

Here are some ideas of what we'd want to learn from them:

How does your activity shape their relationship?
How do they get private time?
What do they do when they get sick of each other?
How does it affect their sex lives?
How does it affect their social lives?
How do they resolve differences?

Okay? So pass this around far and wide please.

And email me offlist

My name's Michael and I work for a company that does marketing research for movies before they get released.

Basically we stage free preview screenings of movies before they come out.

Recent released films that we screened were Talladega Nights, the Departed, Man of the Year, and more.

There is an advance screening of a new Vince Vaughn (Dodgeball, Wedding Crashers) comedy planned for 7:30 Wednesday the 18th at the AMC Woodland Hills.

The film is called "Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show." It follows Vince and a group of stand-up comedians as they tour from Hollywood to the Heartland, a journey covering 6000 miles and 30 nightly stand-up shows over 30 days.

I will be distributing free passes for this event throughout the valley this weekend, and depending on how quickly we book it up, perhaps also on Monday and Tuesday. I am willing to juggle where I pass out tickets to give everyone a chance to go. If you have a party of four or more people, I may well be willing to come and drop them off to you myself or to meet you somewhere mutually convenient.

So treat yourself, your friends and family to some deliciously funny free entertainment. it doesn't come much better than free.

If you would like passes for you/and or your friends, call me anytime at 310 999 3332. I can also be reached here on tribe but my responses may not be as timely as they'd be with a phone call.

Also, if you'd like to be informed of further events in the area, just ask in the phone message or email me here, and I'll add you to my regional list.

Thanks for your time and I'll see you at the movies!

I'm kind of new to the area (a year since I moved to Van Nuys, actually, but it's been a lazy year) and I want to play sports without the hassle of joining a league, so I was thinking of trying this site to form a core group of people (probably guys, but girls are welcome) who want to start playing sports on a regular basis.

My idea is to get a group of guys (and girls, if any wanna play, too) together weekly or so to play some team sport. We could also start an online bulletin board on Yahoo or something like that and we could communicate on there and maybe people can look for partners for other events at other times, like running or work out partners or tennis.

I figure the group can sort of vote to decide what sports to play, but since I'm starting the group, I'll ghrow out a few ideas:

1. Volleyball. You only need 4 people (6-8 is ideal, I think). I'm pretty sure there are sand courts around the Valley, though grass or indoor might work in a pinch. And I really love this sport. If enough people are up for it, amybe we can carpool to beach courts sometimes.

2. Football. I haven't played football in years. I don't mean pad-wearing football, I mean casual, 2 hand touch or flag football. Min 6 players should work (3 on 3 is min for a casual game in the park). And it's football season.

3. Basketball. I'm tall, but I'm not very good, but it's good exercise and I can enjoy it.

4. Soccer. This can be fun if enough people show an interest, like at least 10.

5. Dodgeball. Ever since the movie, people are playing this. It sounds weird to me, but I think it'd be fun to try sometime.

6. Mini Softball. You need too many people to play a real game, but with 10 people, you can play a variation where each person plays for themselves, and we all takes turns at bat and you get a point for each base you take in your at bat. After a couple hours, when people are ready to quit, whoever's in the lead wins. One plus is that everyone gets to bat twice as often and you are never sitting on the bench.

By the way, I'm straight, not that it matters. I'm fine with any orientation, but I don't expect this to be a "dating" group.

As for athletic ability, I'm in pretty good shape for my age, but not much better than that. I'm not looking for super athletes, but I'd like to steer clear of those who are so out of shape they can't play a sport without risking a heart attack.

So if you are interested, e-mail me. If I get enough response, I'll start an online group to discuss plans and send you the info.

Oh, and if I only get a couple responses, maybe we can play tennis sometime or one-on-one basketball. I'm posting this in a few other places besides Tribe, too, so I'm not looking for this to be a group just for burners, though if it turned out that way, that's cool.

Namaste,

I'm trying to help my best friend break her lease, so we're trying to find someone to rent her room. We put up an ad on craigslist, but I figured I'd probably have better luck here.

The Room:
Available NOW! (Rent begins Sep. 1) 10'5" x 10'5", 8-foot ceilings, unfurnished, ceiling fan and lights, wall-to-wall carpeting, large full-length mirror double closet, large window with view of cul-de-sac and mountains. Plenty of outlets and a spot for a phone hook-up. Room belonged to a non-smoker.

The House:
4 Bedroom, 2 1/2 bath. Central AC and heating. Beautiful backyard on Lindero Country Club Golf Course. You will be sharing your bathroom (which has a tub with a shower head) with one female and one male. The bedrooms are upstairs. Common areas are the living room, kitchen and dining area. Cable television/wireless internet is shared by everyone in the house. Utilities are also shared and include electric, garbage, gas and water. The house is less than a block from Albertson's, fast food options, Staples and Michael's Crafts. Convenient to public transit, bus stop is also less than a block away. House is close-to but off of 101 freeway, less than 15 minutes from Cal Lutheran Campus, and Zuma Beach and Malibu are a 20-minute drive.

The Roommates:
Two friendly, geeky male graphic/web design professionals, 22 and 23, business partners/friends. One quiet, nice female massage therapist, 26.

You:
No smokers!!! No couples!!! No drugs!!! Pets negotiable.
Male, female, gay, straight, white, black, polka-dotted, doesn't matter.
What does matter: you must be clean, willing to pitch in on chores and share space respectfully. You need to bring your own flatware and cookware, but the refrig and pantry will be shared. Preferred age range: 18-28, students and co-signs welcome. You must submit to a credit check. Please email if you have any further questions, would like to see more photos of the house, or would like to make arrangements to view the room and meet your potential roommates. We're sorry but we cannot secure the room or accept a deposit until after you have viewed it. We will be showing the space Tuesday, Aug. 22nd starting at 7:30 p.m. Please email if you'd like to come by!

My email is hentaikittyprincess@gmail.com. If anyone has any leads or interest in the room, hit me up!

Thanks!

respectful of this special place.

Please, drive carefully coming into and out of the ranch, as it is a dirt
road. 4 x 4 trucks can really chew up the grading in the road. I know
it’s fun to play Dukes of Hazard, but if you can save it for another
day, I’m sure there is a dirt road just calling your name somewhere
else.

Also, let’s all remember the leave no trace policy. We have seen a lot
of MOOP "Material Out Of Place" out there with other parties, and it really
breaks our hearts. Everyone knows better, so please do the right thing.
There are always plenty of trashcans so there is no reason not to take a few
extra steps to keep your trash in its place.

This is a costume party, please come expecting to have a great time!

My current roommate is moving in with her boyfriend, so I need to find a new person to share my 2 BR/2 BA apartment by May 1! It's close to both the 101 and 405 freeways, also very close to the Westfield mall and Trader Joe's. The apartment is lovely, bright, clean, and spacious. It was newly painted and new carpet was installed before I moved in 7 months ago. The available room is large, and has a big attached bathroom as well. With this great apartment comes a small gym, pool, jacuzzi, balcony, and gated covered parking. Utilities are generally around $60 per person and includes electric, gas, cable, and cable modem. I am a laid-back, outdoorsy SoCal native who doesn't make much noise and is relatively tidy. I hope to find someone who is respectful, friendly, and pays the rent on time. :)

Before moving here, I lived in Orange County for a few months and they had a regular beach gathering for Orange County burners. I forget if it was monthly or bi-weekly. I thought that Burners in the Valley might be up for something like that.

I'm thinking we could start out with a get together at Balboa Lake. People can bring food / snacks / etc. And burner toys -- hoops, practice poi, whatever. Anyway, if we get a coherent group of Valley Burners together, we could start planning other stuff -- meet ups at a bar, hiking trips, ski trips, and, no least of all, mutual help and support for preparing for BM 06.

Also, perhaps we could get together for caravaning and/or preparing some kind of group area other events like Xara Dulzura, Dark Skies, or Joshua Tree Music Festival.

Well, if you are interested, post here or e-mail me and if there is enough interest, I'll pick a day.

When I lived in Las Vegas, I belonged to a writer's group that met once a week to exchange works and critique the work that had been exchanged the prior week. It worked pretty well. We had a mix of poets, novelists and screenwriters. Most were aspiring. A few of the poets had minor publications. We had about 6 people per meeting, with some being core members (regulars) and a couple that would drop in occassionally, and that number seemed to work well.

I've looked around, and haven't seen anything similar. I'm sure they're out there, I just haven't found them or what I've found is not quite what I'm looking for (only for screenwriters, only for established writers, too far away, too many members to provide much personal attention, etc.) So, I figure I may as well start one.

So here we go:

Meta~4 Writer's Group
---------------------------
Day: Sunday (Nov. 6)
Time: 3:00pm
Place: My apartment (near the 405 and Sherman Way). E-mail me for directions.

Topics at first meeting:
1) Where to hold future meetings (possibly find a coffee house or bookstore everyone can agree on).
2) When to hold future meetings (I'm easy -- I go to school in the mornings and I'm free the rest of the time).
3) Meet and Greet
4) Exchange writing pieces we'd like the others to read and discuss at the next meeting.

So, there it is. The ball is in everyone else's court. I'm limiting the group to 11 people for now, both because that is a power number, because that's how many chairs I have, and because I prefer smaller writer's groups and 11 members means about 7-8 people can be expected to attend per week.

If you want to be part of this group, it would suck if you were the 12th person who tried to join, right? So if you are interested, bite the bullet and join today. Don't put it off until tomorrow...tomorrow...tomorrow...tomorrow...
Anyway, I want to find some cool pots, flower boxes, etc. for my patio and I thought a store that sold this stuff used would be a really good find, if it actually exists.

In case it doesn't exist, does anyone have any thoughts on the best place to buy plant supplies, or plants, in the Valley? This is for an apartment patio, so I'm not looking for big stuff (trees, etc.).
There's absolutely nothing on these Californians' third...album...that you haven't heard before on a hundred indie discs. Languid strum patterns, spooky pianos, shimmery arpeggios, distant e-bows sawing away under half-whispered, heavy-lidded vocals-- it's all there. But it's better than you might think...The reason it all works? Texture. Aaron Espinoza pays more attention to texture than just about anyone out there twiddling the proverbial knobs...Every instrument on "Everyone Down Here" sounds warm, yet weird: hearing a simple tremolo on a guitar lick is, somehow, a revelation. Even the tape hiss that haunts the first and last several seconds of each song is somehow rendered pleasant, like a handful of sand oozing between your fingers.
Perhaps no other guitarist has had as much influence on Jamaican music, and certainly none as far as contemporary reggae is concerned, than Earl "Chinna" Smith, the quintessential session musician and tour player.

In a career that has spanned over three decades, "Chinna" has made a name for himself with countless sessions for reggaes biggest names, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, Bunny Wailer, and Agustus Pablo to name a few. Smith has literally played with everyone in reggae lending his unique guitar sound and arrangements to well over 300 recordings, including many of reggae music's most memorable classics.

When Smiths guitar work reached the ears of Bob Marley, he was asked to add his guitar sound to the reggae legends 1976 classic, "Rastaman Vibration" album, as well as touring with the Wailers. He also played guitar on several other sessions for Marley over the years, including several of the classic songs on "Exodus."

An unabashed purest, and a musician's musician, Chinna is committed to live recording, a trait that caries over to his guitar playing style which involves a minimum use of studio gadgets.

"People have stopped working and let electronics do their work for them," Chinna told Guitar Player Magazine in a 1983 interview, "I'm not against electronics but I believe if the music I'm playing can be more natural, then it will be more spiritual." Chinna continues to play and produce the music he loves and has much more yet to be released, so stay tuned...

Of couse we want as upscale as we can get as it is a way of thanking everyone for their hard work and a chance to spend some time together dress up!. Last week we tried Las Dunas(I might not have the exact name) a Peruvian resturant that was fantastic. Located one blook west of Winnetka on Saticoy in the Food For Less Shopping center. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the food was fantastic. The owner/server will spend all the time you would like going over the menu. He will even give you a history of Peru and it's Asian influences! The fish is their specility and one plate is enough for two or three. I hope you will add your favotites and new discoveries!
